Tim tried to run, forgetting in his panic the gunshot wound to his foot. He stumbled and fell, then quickly pulled himself up and used the edges of the pews as handholds to propel himself along.

“For Christ’s sake, help me!” he roared at Alek, who was still standing right where they’d both been when the revenant—Jesus Christ, it was Wayne Marshall, Tim realized—had pulled Kim into the confessional. He rounded the corner, already sweating from the exertion and the terrifying fear that she was gone. Alek hurried past him and Tim watched his back as he opened the door through which Kim had disappeared and stood staring into the darkness inside. Then he stepped back and opened the penitent door on the left side before gently closing them all. He turned, just as Tim reached him.

“Don’t say it,” Tim said, even though no words were necessary. He could see it in the other man’s face even if he hadn’t been able to see inside the confessional for himself.

All the rooms were empty.

For a moment he stood there, helpless. Then, muscles in his jaw twitching, he limped over to a tall brass candle stand, carefully removed the heavy candle and set it on the altar.

“Don’t,” Alek warned.

Tim ignored him, and using the stand as a clumsy crutch, made his way back to the confessional.

Alek blocked his way.

“Move,” Tim told him in a tone that brooked no argument. He didn’t care that the other man had a gun. He didn’t care that the other man clearly had no problem using it. He was more than willing to die now that Kim had been taken. What he was most assuredly not willing to do, however, was accept that she was gone, not without seeing for himself that she was absolutely, incontrovertibly, not there. Putting most of his weight on his good foot, he hefted the stand, his injured hand burning with renewed pain.

Alek shook his head. “I can’t let you do this.”

“Where is she?”

“You already know.”

Tim glared at him. “Get the fuck out of my way.”

“She’s gone.”

“Nobody gets one over on you, do they? And how does this fit into your plan? She safe now, or are we moments from annihilation?”

“We can get her back.”

“Oh? And how do we do that?”

“Catherine will know.”

Tim sneered. “Yeah, Catherine clearly knows everything, but Catherine’s not here, is she? Now get out of the way or this is going to get ugly.”

Alek held his gaze and his ground for a few moments more. Then he sighed and stepped aside. “Don’t do this,” he said.

“Do what?”

“Desecrate the church.”

“I didn’t figure you for the religious type.”

“It’s not right.”

“Yeah, well, if God wants to put in an appearance, I’ll gladly answer for it.”

He opened the center door, more than aware that what had just happened was not a coincidence, but a message. His father had died in a confessional. His father had reappeared as a revenant in a confessional. And that was what they had used to lure and take Kim.
